Outlast II is a first person horror game developed and published by Red Barrels and originally released in 2017 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows systems. In this game, which is an independent sequel to 2013’s Outlast, players control cameraman Blake Langermann who becomes separated from his journalist wife Lynn following a helicopter crash in the Arizona desert as they investigate the murder of a mysterious pregnant Jane Doe. The game takes place in and around the fictional Temple Gate town, where the inhabitants are religiously devoted to a twisted form of Catholicism ruled by a man known as Papa Knoth. Will Blake be able to reunite with Lynn, escape the cult of Temple Gate, and come to terms with his recurring nightmares of childhood friend Jessica?
Outlast II plays in the same way to the first game, in which players navigate the world in a first person perspective, with no possibility of fighting through the enemies of Temple Gate. Blake’s only equipment is his camera, which he uses to document his time throughout the story and allows him to zoom in on distant objects. The camera is also equipped with a night vision mode which uses up disposable batteries, which must be found across the environment. Without fight options, the player’s only course of action when facing danger is to run away.
