Hey there everyone, and welcome to the seventh part of my Nostalgia Nation playthrough of The World Ends With You: Final Remix playthrough. As with all my Nostalgia Nation playthroughs so far, although I have played The World Ends With You before, it was back in 2007 on the Nintendo DS, whereas now I’m playing the graphically enhanced version for the Nintendo Switch (which also comes with some new content and altered gameplay mechanics).
In this seventh stream we take on the new content added to the Nintendo Switch version of the game, A New Day. In terms of difficulty it probably would have made more sense to do Another Day first, but as that’s an alternate dimension and A New Day takes place following the main story, I felt it made more sense to go into that. So we join Neku and Beat some time after the end of the story, as they find themselves mysteriously drawn back to the Underground, where they’re joined by Reaper Coco in a version of Shibuya that is very different to what we knew. We encounter familiar faces…who behave differently, battles work differently, and difficulty takes a huge spike. We take on the entirety of A New Day in this stream, including an ending sequence that takes me by surprise. ROLL ON NEO: THE WORLD ENDS WITH YOU.
As of the posting of this I’m still in the process of unlocking all the Secret Reports in my own time, with only Beat’s Week, Day 7 and the 3 parts of A New Day to go (which won’t fully unlock as I haven’t played Another Day yet). Once I’ve done that, we’ll do what should be our final stream of this game, and be ready for the sequel!
Until next time…buh-bye!
About The World Ends With You – Final Remix
The World Ends with You (known in Japan as Subarashiki Kono Sekai, which translates as It’s a Wonderful World) is an action role-playing game with urban fantasy elements developed by Square Enix and Jupiter for the Nintendo DS. Set in the modern-day Shibuya shopping district of Tokyo, The World Ends with You features a distinctive art style inspired by Shibuya and its youth culture. Development was inspired by elements of Square Enix’s previous game, Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. It was released in Japan in July 2007, and in PAL regions and North America in April 2008. Later, an enhanced port to accommodate the game for mobile devices ported by h.a.n.d. was released in 2012, while a further enhanced port for the Nintendo Switch was released worldwide in 2018 under the title The World Ends with You: Final Remix.
Set in a fictional version of Shibuya known as the UG (Underground), this plane of existence exists alongside the RG (Realground) where the residents live their every day lives. The UG is home to the Reaper’s Game, where selected individuals are placed in life threatening situations to complete 7 days’ worth of challenges to win a chance of returning to their RG lives. Neku Sakuraba, The World Ends With You’s main character, is one such person, though he has no memory of his life prior to waking up on Day 1 of the Reaper’s Game. In the original Nintendo DS version of the game, battles took place across both screens, with the player using the D-pad (or the face buttons) to control Neku’s partner, while Neku was controlled using the touch screen on the bottom screen. On the smartphone and Nintendo Switch versions, gameplay takes place entirely on a single screen with touch functionality (or Joy Con use) controlling both characters in a slightly different way.
