Spider-Man is a 2018 open world action-adventure game for the PlayStation 4, developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Set in a fictionalised version of Manhattan, New York, the game features a Peter Parker/Spider-Man who has been active in the role for eight years, allowing there to be a history and background to both the main character, as well as several supporting characters and villains. As Peter, we work alongside Doctor Otto Octavius as a research assistant in the development of neurally controlled prosthetic limbs, and as Spider-Man we protect the streets of New York. The game opens with Spider-Man aiding the police in finally taking down Wilson Fisk (the Kingpin)’s reign as the criminal boss of New York, setting up a power vaccuum in which a new criminal empire known only as the Demons to rise up.
The game is played primarily in third person with a huge focus on aerial free roaming using Spider-Man’s web slinging abilities and combat allowing fluid combat against groups of enemies combining traditional fighting, use of gadgets, Spider-Man’s own web abilities, and acrobatic movement allowing enemies to be juggled in the air after being launched up. The game consists of story missions, side missions, as well as collectibles and challenges that can be used to expand Spider-Man’s set of skills, gadgets, and even suits.
